The gig economy is changing the way we work, but it has widened a massive hole in our social safety net: access to benefits for independent workers. People have been talking about this problem for years, but we’re finally doing something about it for millions of low-wage, workers critical to our economy. We are looking for a scrappy, fast paced, ambitious Product Manager to help define the broad product vision and lead on product execution for our answer to this social problem: a portable benefits platform.
NDWA Labs is the innovation arm of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, one of the country’s most dynamic and successful social change organizations, and we have built the first portable benefits platform so that independent domestic workers can access the benefits they need through their work. We are using technology to make work better for domestic workers, who are the people who work in our homes including nannies, house cleaners, and caregivers of the elderly and people who are disabled, and have been excluded from most efforts to improve work for workers in the United States.
Call us crazy, but we’re trying new solutions to fix really, really old problems. Experimentation is in our DNA. We’re obsessed with workers, and we’re the ones to bring every conversation - whether about the future of work, the gig economy on the social safety net - back to what workers need. We love sitting at the uncomfortable intersection of nonprofit / labor organization / tech startup. We’re not afraid to try 5 not-so-great ideas to get to 1 really good one, but we’ll evaluate and make a call quickly. We think that if people work, they deserve benefits.
You love creating product. You’re fascinated by the way technology intersects with the way we live, with a healthy dose of concern for the direction we’re headed. You’re the person in the room who asks the question everyone else was thinking but weren’t sure they should ask. You’re detail-oriented, and organized in your thinking, but you love taking time for out-of-the-box brainstorms, even if they’re just to flex your creativity. You’re obsessed with the user, and are always the person to ask “what do our users say/want?” You think that if people work, they deserve benefits.
